It could be a few things, one, there was a bug that if a villager is in a 1 by 1 block space, it becomes unemployed, 2, they can't "reach" the workspace, put the lecture one block lower and don't put a block directly on top of it.

I found that, for some reason, putting a bed down next to the villager caused them to reset almost instantly and allowed me to break the lectern over and over, resetting the trade.
